There are a lot of newborn photographers out there who stick to the hard and fast rule that newborn photos can only be done in the first 2 to maybe 3 weeks of life and that’s ok if that’s their style. But I’m here to tell you that I am 100% on board with “older” newborn photography. Will your session look a bit different? Most likely, but that’s ok! This is your baby and every stage is worth documenting.
The rule of 2 weeks comes from the idea that babies are easier to pose and get into those curled up positions, and while yes, that is true to an extent, every baby is different. I’ve posed babies up to 8 weeks old so it really just depends on your baby and how they respond.
Will I promise you that we’ll be able to achieve a sleepy baby session and all those little poses, nope! But I don’t promise that to anyone because I’ve had 6 days new babies come in wide awake and ready to party. But, will I promise you that I will try my hardest to get those shots and all the sweet images you’ve been dreaming of? Absolutely!
Your baby might be more awake for his or her session beyond 2-3 weeks but that’s 100% ok, and I love the photos with eye contact. That being said, I can almost always coax baby into some sleepy images with the magic of a good swaddle. Check out these photos of sweet Augustina, proving that newborn images are totally possible at 6 WEEKS OLD!
