Taking a little time to prepare for a family photography session can help ensure that you have a smooth and enjoyable experience while capturing beautiful memories. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
Research and select a photographer whose style and portfolio align with your vision and preferences. Communicate with your photographer beforehand to discuss your ideas, expectations, and any specific requests you may have. I hope that I will be the right local photographer for you but I understand that my style isn’t what everyone is looking for. I am all about candid, emotive, heartfelt images, and I love colorful skies and bold tones.
Your photographer should provide you with the best locations for what you’re seeking. Upon booking, I provide a location guide for your session with sample images from locations I’ve photographed. We’ll select a time when the lighting is ideal, I really only shoot during golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset). This provides the most flattering light for you and will allow us to achieve that glowy look you see in my photos!
Decide on a color scheme for your family’s outfits. Choose complementary colors and avoid too many heavy patterns that may distract from the main subjects. Aim for a cohesive look without being overly matchy. Consider the location and season when selecting appropriate attire. I provide a style guide and FREE access to my always growing client closet. Please consider taking advantage of the items I offer. I’ve hand selected these pieces to coordinate and knowing they photograph well, plus it saves you money and time, that’s a win-win!
Inform all family members about the session and explain what to expect. Make sure everyone knows the time, location, and any specific instructions provided by the photographer. Encourage family members to dress appropriately and be prepared to cooperate during the session. This is so important! If mom books the session because she loves my candid and emotive images but doesn’t communicate this to everyone else, guess what happens? The kids and sometimes other parent are all looking directly at the camera and smiling the entire time. Of course I will always try to get some traditional portraits, but for the most part, my goal is to capture you, being you!
Ensure that everyone is well-rested and relaxed before the session. Give little ones an extra or late nap since summer sessions often take place late in the evening. Arriving early allows you to settle in, get acquainted with the surroundings, and address any last-minute concerns. Plus, no one arrives in a great mood when when they are running late and rushing! Definitely not the tone we want to set and we don’t want to miss that beautiful golden hour lighting.
Family photography sessions are meant to capture genuine moments and emotions. Encourage your family members to relax, be themselves, and enjoy the experience. Candid shots often make for some of the most memorable photos.
Hopefully by following these tips and collaborating with your photographer (maybe me? ;)), you’ll have a great experience and, dare I say fun, family photography session that results in amazing memories. I’d love to be your photographer whether you live in the Flathead are visiting Whitefish or Glacier National Park. Send me a message, and let’s collab!
