Would you ever consider traveling for a newborn photography session? With my studio located in Kalispell, Montana, I’m always so honored when clients are willing to travel to me from other areas of Montana like Missoula. I know what a task that can be with a newborn baby so I’m incredibly grateful to work with these families!
The typical prep for a newborn session still applies (find my prep advice here!) but I have a few additional tips if you are driving a couple of hours or more to your newborn session.
My best suggestion would be to plan an overnight trip, if possible, as this will eliminate stress the morning of your session and also means baby is less likely to have slept for several hours just before your session. That being said, if you’re up for the drive day of, try to time your arrival to give baby a little awake time before your session and feed him or her just before arriving at the studio, so baby is full and sleepy.
Bring extra…everything! I highly recommend extra diapers, wipes, burp cloths, clothing, and pacifiers. I also recommend having extra bottles on hand, even if breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can be stressful enough, let alone trying to travel, pump, breastfeed, etc. and some babies do tend to eat more during newborn photography sessions. Pro tip: Bottles sometimes work better during newborn sessions since babies just want to be with mama (understandably!) and can be a little harder to settle if passing back and forth. But, at the end of the day, you’re the pro when it comes to your baby and you definitely get to decide what’s best!
If you’re taking family photos with your newborn session, avoid pesky wrinkles and bring photography outfits with you versus wearing them in the car. I recommend fairly simple clothing anyway and generally photograph close up so you really only need to worry about simple tops. If you want something more, feel free to take advantage of my client closet for moms and young children. I have many dresses that are meant to fit a variety of sizes and photograph beautifully.
And my number one tip, try not to stress! You’re going through some major life changes that can be stressful enough and the last thing I want is for your newborn session to be a point of stress. Just have fun with your session! At the end of the day, this is all about capturing your sweet baby and family just as you are.
And finally, the reason you’re really here…to see the gorgeous babies! Check out this sweet newborn session in my Kalispell newborn photography studio. You might recognize this beautiful couple from their Fall maternity session in Kalispell, Montana.
